If you get drug tested in your sport, the answer is short: BPC-157 is prohibited. The BPC-157 WADA listing puts it in a class called S0, and everything in S0 is prohibited all year, not only on the day you compete. A prescription doesn't change that.
That's the whole answer. The rest is why it lands there, and what the one exception actually involves.
What the BPC-157 WADA listing actually says
S0 is the World Anti-Doping Agency's catch-all class for substances that no government health authority anywhere has cleared for people to use as medicine — drugs still in development or discontinued, designer compounds, substances cleared only for animals. The 2026 Prohibited List then names BPC-157 outright, in the text of the class, as one of its examples.
Two things follow from that. BPC-157 sits on the list because of the absence of an approval, not because of a finding about whether it works. And it is prohibited at all times, which the list spells out as in- and out-of-competition.
One more line matters. Everything in S0 is what the Code calls a Specified Substance, which sounds softer than it is. The Code's own note says Specified substances "should not in any way be considered less important or less dangerous" than anything else on the list; the label only marks the ones more likely to have been taken for a reason other than performance. It shapes how a case is decided, not whether a rule was broken.
USADA refreshed its athlete guidance on BPC-157 on August 10, 2026, the date carried in the page's own record — which is why a lot of people met this rule for the first time in late summer. The classification itself didn't change.
"At all times" really does mean the off-season
Some substances are prohibited only in competition. For those the window is narrow: it opens at 11:59 pm the night before you compete and closes at the end of the event and its sample collection. That is what most people picture when they think about drug testing.
BPC-157 isn't in that group. There is no month of the year when it is fine, so an out-of-competition test in the off-season counts exactly as much as one taken at a national final.
Underneath sits the rule that catches people out. Article 2.1.1 of the World Anti-Doping Code is about as blunt as a legal document gets: it is the athlete's personal duty to make sure nothing prohibited enters their body, and nobody has to prove intent, fault or knowledge for the violation to stand. Being careful is not a defense. Not knowing is not one either.
Does a prescription protect you?
It doesn't, and the reason isn't arbitrary.
S0 is defined by the missing approval, and a prescription is a different thing: one clinician deciding a preparation is appropriate for one patient. That's a real and lawful medical act, but it doesn't put a national approval behind the molecule, so it can't move it out of S0. There is no approved BPC-157 product anywhere, and the compounded formulation prescribed here is not FDA-approved either.
The one mechanism that does change an athlete's position is a Therapeutic Use Exemption. Under Article 4.4.1 of the Code, using a prohibited substance in line with a granted TUE is not a violation. Athletes below international level apply to their national anti-doping organization — USADA in the United States — whose committee usually decides within 21 days of a complete application. USADA says approval is unlikely here, and gives its reason: permitted alternatives are available. It weighs each application case by case.
None of that is a judgment about whether the medicine is right for you. A licensed provider may still prescribe a compounded formulation, and that decision is between you and your doctor. What your sport permits is a separate question, and only one of the two is settled in a clinic.
The other peptide in the vial sits somewhere else
BPC-157 often arrives paired with TB-500 in a single vial — that pairing is what Wolverine is. For a tested athlete that is two entries on the list, and they don't sit in the same place.

That last column has teeth. Under Article 10.2 of the Code, a violation involving a substance that is not Specified starts at four years unless the athlete can establish it wasn't intentional. For a Specified substance the starting point is two years unless the anti-doping organization can establish it was. Same vial, two peptides, two different burdens of proof.
Does BPC-157 show up on a drug test?
Laboratories can find it. Whether the program testing you looks for it is a separate question, and only your own organization can answer it.
A 2017 paper from the anti-doping laboratory in Salt Lake City validated a urine test down to 0.1 ng/mL and showed that BPC-157 leaves a stable breakdown product behind, which gives the test a second thing to look for (Cox et al., Drug Testing and Analysis).
As of September 6, 2026, the day this article was written, the newest published work moves testing out of urine and into blood. A paper dated July 27, 2026 from the doping-control laboratory at Ghent University describes one streamlined workflow that picks up 54 prohibited peptides — BPC-157 and TB-500 among them — in dried blood spots, serum and plasma, at 0.05 to 1.25 ng/mL (Mazzarino et al., The Analyst). The dried spot is the practical part: those samples stayed readable without refrigeration, so they can be posted rather than shipped cold. Cheaper handling is usually how a test spreads.
Here is what none of that tells you: how long after a dose BPC-157 can still be found in a person. That number has not been published. The 2017 paper reported the peptide stayed stable in a urine sample for at least four days, which describes how a sample survives in a lab, not how long someone would test positive — the two get quoted as though they were the same figure. The intact peptide clears fast, under 30 minutes in a 2025 review of 36 studies (Vasireddi et al., HSS Journal), which is why laboratories chase the breakdown products instead. What to watch next
WADA rewrites the list every year, publishing the next edition in October to take effect on 1 January. As of September 6, 2026, the day this article was written, the 2027 edition had not been published, so the 2026 list is the one in force. Nothing suggests a change is coming — S0 is where a substance sits while no health authority has approved it.
If you compete, say so first
Tell the provider you are tested before anything else. It belongs in your history, and it should change the conversation — there may be a permitted route to what you are actually trying to fix.
Then check your own rulebook rather than an article, this one included. Organizations that have adopted the World Anti-Doping Code inherit the list wholesale; competitions run outside it write their own. USADA runs a drug reference service for exactly this question.
